An Evening Walk Along Chuo Ward’s Waterfront

Chuo Ward’s waterfront is home to many places where the night views are especially beautiful. Areas such as Kachidoki and Harumi have shed the images many of us once held of them, transforming into new neighborhoods lined with well-maintained promenades and high-rise buildings. The lights reflected on the water and the cityscapes seen from bridges reveal expressions quite different from those of daytime. As foot traffic eases in the evening, night becomes the perfect time to quietly appreciate the scenery. On this walk, I explored Chuo Ward’s waterfront at a relaxed pace after dark.

Reimei Kobashi Bridge

Just outside Kachidoki Station, spanning the Asashio Canal, is Reimei Kobashi Bridge. Opened on March 25, 2024, this new pedestrian-only bridge connects the Kachidoki side with Harumi 3-chome on the opposite bank. On the day I visited, I saw many people crossing—some who appeared to live in Harumi, and others heading home from workplaces in the area. It was clear that the bridge has already become part of everyday life, making daily movement through the neighborhood more convenient.

The bridge’s white structure features a gently arched design, and at night it is beautifully illuminated. The soft light shimmers on the surface of the water, subtly enhancing the riverside atmosphere. Harmonizing well with the surrounding high-rise buildings, the bridge gave me the feeling that although this is a place I have known for years, I was somehow visiting a new city.

Toyosu Ohashi Bridge

After crossing Reimei Kobashi toward Harumi and walking a short distance along the Asashio Canal, you reach Kanni-dori (Route 2). Continuing a little farther toward Toyosu brings you to Toyosu Ohashi Bridge. With a total length of about 550 meters, it is an impressively long bridge, and walking across it allows you to fully appreciate its scale.
Toyosu Ohashi Bridge was featured on NHK’s documentary program “72 Hours,” and some people even travel from afar to enjoy the views from the bridge. From the top, you can take in sweeping views of Rainbow Bridge, Toyosu Market, and the high-rise buildings of Kachidoki, Harumi and Toyosu. At night, the overlapping lights create a distinctly Tokyo-like cityscape. Slowly walking across the long bridge while feeling the openness of the sky is one of the greatest pleasures of this evening stroll.
